Chapter 2 · Rhythm, Meter & Expression

Rhythm and Beat in Music

Rhythm is the pulse that drives all music. Understanding it transforms how you listen, play, and practice.

Beat and Pulse — The Heartbeat of Music

Every piece of music has a beat — a steady, regular pulse that organizes time. When you tap your foot to a song, you're following the beat. describes how fast or slow this pulse is, measured in (beats per minute). A slow ballad might be 60 (). An energetic dance track might be 140 ().

Tip Tempo is measured in BPM. A metronome helps you keep a steady beat while practicing.

Note Durations — How Long Notes Last

Notes have durations that tell you how long to hold them. A lasts 4 beats. A lasts 2 beats. A lasts 1 beat. An lasts half a beat. These divisions create — the way notes are arranged in time to create patterns and forward motion.

Tip Rests work the same way as notes — a quarter rest means silence for exactly 1 beat.

Time Signatures — How Beats Are Grouped

A tells you how many beats are in each measure and which note gets one beat. The most common is — four beats per measure, note gets one beat. Waltz music uses — three beats per measure. groups beats in pairs of three, giving it a flowing, compound feel. The first beat of each measure is usually the strongest.

Tip In 4/4 time, beats are felt as strong-weak-medium-weak. Count '1-2-3-4' out loud while listening to any pop song.

Syncopation — Playing Against the Beat

Syncopation happens when accents or notes fall on the off-beats — between the main beats rather than on them. It's what gives jazz, funk, and pop music that feeling of forward momentum and surprise. Instead of landing cleanly on beats 1, 2, 3, 4, syncopated rhythms emphasize the spaces between them.

Rhythm in Tiny Instrument

Tiny Instrument's Chapter 2 covers rhythm, meter, and expression in depth — from understanding beat and pulse through to how rhythm shapes the emotional quality of music. The Practice mode includes tempo control so you can drill scales and exercises at any BPM, slowing down when you need precision and speeding up as you build confidence.
