Open a progression

In Compose, open any saved chord progression. The chords run left to right in the strip — each one a chip showing its Roman numeral, name, and a tiny keyboard of its voicing.

Tap and hold the chord

Bring up the chip's menu directly on the chord:

• iPhone and iPad — touch and hold the chip
• Mac — right-click (or Control-click) it

Choose Change chord from the menu.

3

Pick a new scale degree

A small picker appears with the key's chords — , , , , , , and — with the current one marked. Tap a different degree and the chord in that slot swaps to it instantly, so you can audition alternatives in place.

Tip It's the quickest way to test a substitution — try a where you had a and hear how the progression turns.
4

Your voicing is kept

Changing the degree this way preserves the chord's existing voicing — its inversion and any slash bass carry over to the new chord. If you'd rather re-voice it too, select the chord normally and use the inversion and bass controls instead.
